The object of our yoga

The object of our yoga is self-perfection, not self annulment.

There are two paths set for the feet of the Yogin, withdrawal from the universe and perfection in the universe; the first by acetism, the second is effected by tapasya; the first receives us when we lose God in Existence, the second is attained when we fulfil existence in God. Let ours be the path of perfection, not of abandonmentl let our aim be victory in the battle, not the escape from all conflict.

But this world is Brahman, the world is God, the world is Satyam, the world is Ananda; it is our misreading of the world through mental egoism that is a falsehood and our wrong relation with God ^2 in the world that is a misery. There is no other falsity and no other cause of sorrow. Read more »

The Hour of God

From the back of the Hour of God by Sri Aurobindo.
ISBN: 978-81-7058-834-4
with pieces written from 1910 – 1940.

Man’s greatness is not in what he is but in what he makes possible. His glory is that he is the closed place and secret workshop of a living labour in which supermanhood is made ready by a divine Craftsman.

But he is admitted to a yet greater greatness and it is this that, unlike the lower creation, he is allowed to be partly the conscious artisan of his divine change. His free assent, his consecrated will and participation are needed that into his body may descend the glory that will replace him. His aspiration is earth’s call to the supramental Creator.

If earth calls and the supreme answers, the hour can be even now for that immense and glorious transformation.

Maya and Deconstruction

This is the beginning of the last chapter of the 7 Secrets of Shiva by Devdutt Pattanaik and it is called Nataraja‘s secret: destruction is deconstruction.

Brahma creates. Shiva destroys. Brahma is not worshipped. Shiva is worshipped. This is because Brahma creates Kama, Yama and Tripura, desire, death and the three worlds. Shiva is Kamantaka, Yamantaka and Tripurantaka, destroyer of desire, death and the three worlds.

Humans desire life, fear death, and construct three worlds because humans fear death more than any other living creature on Earth. Our fear is greater because we can imagine. We imagine what happens after death, we imagine a world without death, we imagine a world without us and wonder what is the point of life. Unable to make sense of things, we try to control life – we get attached to things, we resist change, and we create property. Human civilization is thus rooted in fear. Its a delusion. Brahmanda or culture is Maya. Read more »
